In December 2009, I bought my first Blackberry, the Bold 9000. Throughout that month I took the time to learn the intricacies of the Blackberry OS and learn its strenghts and weaknesses. The last three years of iPhone ownership has blinded me to advantages offered by the Blackberry; chief among these is true OS multitasking. Using applications such as Pandora and the Wall Street Journal reader simultaneously, makes the single tasking iPhone look archaic at times. After a month of using the Bold 9000 I was able to exchange it for the Bold 9700; and thats when things got interesting. Read the rest of this entry »

Mobile Application Development Outlook for 2010
January 22nd, 2010 by Brent Gairy
Mobile usage and more specifically smartphone usage, represents a unique opportunity for application developers and brand owners alike to generate new revenue and brand awareness. The combination of always on 3G Internet, GPS and portability, means that consumers are increasingly turning to their smartphones for business, shopping and leisure activities. Unlike open platforms such as the Internet, smartphones are separated by a range of operating systems, handsets and carrier support. Read the rest of this entry »

Salient has a new look for 2010, gone is the lavender and purple layout in the previous design, for a more refines look. The goals for the new site are to:

2. Feature articles about web design, mobile and online marketing.
3. Have a solid design foundation to facilitate the addition of new pages.
Hotgloo: A New Type of Wireframing Tool
November 9th, 2009 by Brent Gairy
Several years ago I was introduced to a powerful wireframing tool called Axure, it came in handy to build interactive mockups of websites before we started site designs. As good as it was, I had several issues with it; cost and no OS X compatibility. Hotgloo is a new beta web application that while not aimed at the high-end Azure market, is good enough for me to quickly generate site concepts and then share them with co-workers and clients.
One thing I really miss about Axure was its interactive functionality. I could create drop down menus that clients could click on and have it link to the relevant page. Right now I don’t see the equivalent in Hotgloo so I’m using it to display static wireframes. Hotgloo does have one major advantage, its a web application. This means I can work on a project at home and continue where I left off at the office and not have to worry about multiple licenses or saving files.
I’m not sure if I will continue to use Hotgloo, but the outlook is looking good.

Getting iPhone Contacts Photos from Facebook
February 27th, 2009 by Brent Gairy
I wish I had the time to add a photo for all of my Outlook contacts, photos come in pretty handy since I don’t always remember a name but I can recollect faces really well. I came across an iPhone app called Vringo (appstore link) that will match your contacts on your phone to your Facebook account. Vringo Worked well for me and its free. Here is a quick video review I found that may come in handy. Read the rest of this entry »
